The Real Estate Roller Coaster
Summer is here. Remember when? I know for me as a child it was endless days of running around outside with my friends and coming back home only for meals or when the street lights turned on.
Going to amusement parks is another nostalgic part of childhood summers for many of us. We loved going to the Bangor State Fair every year. While I definitely wouldn’t be able to ride my favorite spinning rides anymore, I miss walking around, playing games, and getting a big bag of cotton candy and a plate of fried dough. Funny fact – I have never been to Adventureland here on Long Island. Should I plan a trip?
Speaking of rides, I thought about how purchasing a home is like a roller coaster ride. A thrill ride is supposed to be fun, but it can feel a bit scary without the proper safety precautions. Think of me as your partner in the car beside you, holding your hand through the process.
We start out going up that big giant hill, a waiting game of sorts. Will your offer be accepted? Did your realtor submit everything necessary on your behalf? Will the seller go with someone else’s offer or change their mind?
And then when/if the offer is accepted we fly down that first hill together, excited for the rest of the ride. You are completing the home inspection, signing contracts and applying for your mortgage.
It can all happen fast and before you know it, we’re into the twists and turns and sometimes upside-down matters no one was expecting. Mortgage commitment errors, problems with the inspection, the bank requesting more documents or any variety of stomach-turning bumps in the road.
And then, if all is going well, we get to that easy part of the ride, a few little hills, mostly smooth sailing, getting to the end destination. This is when the title report comes back smooth, any inspection issues with the house have been fixed and you are packing boxes and renting your moving truck, one step closer to setting foot into your dream home.
We part ways at the end of that ride, but we always have the memory of that experience. Even if we aren’t working together anymore, we are forever connected and I am always happy to hear from former clients to see how they are doing and what their next chapter includes.
Sometimes, things don’t go so well and the house you thought you would be yours, goes to someone else. I know how difficult that is and while it might seem hopeless in that moment, you will eventually get off that merry-go-round and find your home.
Remember that it’s easy to be enticed by games you cannot win. If something seems too good to be true, it usually is. Having the right support team in place as you navigate the purchase of a home is key to sinking that ball in the hoop and truly winning the prize.

I have one final thought – should I get a cotton candy machine for the office? I’m usually in charge of the cotton candy machine at our block parties. Haha. Happy Summer!
